How to setup IMAP in Outlook 2003 & 2007

This article includes instructions for setting up an IMAP email account in Outlook 2003 and 2007 for Creative Answers email service.

The purpose of IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is to allow an email client (your PC) to have server-based email management.  With IMAP, a client does not need to download and store its own messages. All messages can be manipulated and stored on the server. 

To setup IMAP in Outlook 2003

  1. Start Outlook 2003
  2. On the Tools menu -> select email accounts
  3. Click -> add a new email account -> click Next
  4. On the email accounts page -> select the IMAP radio button -> click Next
  5. On the email accounts page -> fill out all of the necessary information. Be sure to put in the incoming and outgoing server.
  6. Click -> more settings.
  7. Click -> the outgoing server tab.
  8. Check the box marked "Outgoing server requires SMTP authentication"
  9. Click -> the advanced tab.
  10. Click Save.

To Setup IMAP in Outlook 2007

  1. Start Outlook 2007
  2. On the Tools menu -> select Account Settings
  3. Click on New
  4. Select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP -> click Next
  5. Select "Manually configure server settings or additional server types" -> click Next
  6. Select Internet E-mail ->click Next
  7. Using the information provided with your email account setup, complete the form.  For the Account Type select IMAP
  8. Select More Settings
  9. Select the tab called Outgoing Server
  10. Select "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" and "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" -> click OK
  11. Click Test Account Settings and your email should be successful.  If not, check the account settings are correct.
  12. Click Next
  13. Click Finish
