| When using IMAP folders the emails that are deleted are shown with strikeout. The use of strikeout is standard for IMAP folders. However, you can configure Microsoft Outlook (and many other email clients) to hide the deleted email or to purge (permanently delete) the emails from the folders.
Below are the instructions from hiding deleted (strikeout) emails, grouping deleted (strikeout) emails and purging emails.
Hiding Emails with Strikeout In Microsoft Outlook you can configure the views for your email by folder. Outlook comes with several standard configurations for managing different views. In Outlook 2007 (similar for other versions) the following will hide the emails that are in strikeout.
- Go to the folder you wish to hide the emails, e.g. your Inbox, Sent Items, etc. Each folder must be done seperately.
- On the Menu, Select View, Select Current View and Select "Hide Messages Marked for Deletion"
- To enable the strikeout emails to be viewed follow the same menus but Select IMAP folders.
You can use the Define Views or Customise Current View to create a view for your needs.
Emails that are hidden are NOT deleted from the server and are still included in your email storage quota. To delete the emails read the Purge Emails below.
Group Emails with Strikeout To group the emails into normal emails (no strikeout) and emails marked with strikeout please follows these instructions:
- Go to the folder you wish to hide the emails, e.g. your Inbox, Sent Items, etc. Each folder must be done seperately.
- On the Menu, Select View, Select Current View and Select "Group Messages Marked for Deletion"
- To enable the strikeout emails to be ungrouped follow the same menus but Select IMAP folders.
Purge Emails in a Folder When using IMAP folders, emails that you delete only change status to show as strikeout. However, emails that you purge are permanently deleted from the folder on the PC and the email server, i.e. they are not recoverable after they are purged. To purge emails and free up storage on your email account please follow the instructions below for Outlook:
- Go to the folder you wish to hide the emails, e.g. your Inbox, Sent Items, etc. Each folder can be done seperately or all fodlers done at once.
- On the Menu, Select Edit, Select Purge, Select the Purge option for which folder you want purged. Please remember there is no undo from this action.
