Is it possible to change hosted domain name?

Changing hosted domain names is difficult as the number of services that are directly dependent on the domain name are numerous such as FTP, DNS, POP3/SMTP, databases, IIS site, sub domains, SmarterStats, disk quotas, ACL permissions, Front Page webs, etc. Therefore, a hosted domain cannot be simply changed for you.

To change domainname you need to create a new domain and transfer the files across.  This can be done by:

  1. Create another hosted domain under your account, in the "domains" menu in the control panel and create the website if you did not do it under domains menu.
  2. Access your account via ftp and transfer the files between the domains
  3. Recreate the IMAP and POP3 email accounts.  Login to the new domain and use the IMAP Retreival and POP Retreival to transfer your emails.  You can use the Smartermail Sync client to move Calandar, Contacts, Tasks and Notes.
  4. Set all the necessary items for the domain and website, eg DNS, secure folders etc if required
  5. Setup the Statistics if used

This change can be arranged for your for $50.

For DNN sites you can set the portal alias so that the user does not see the redirection of the url. After creating the domain name as an alias in the Control Panel, log into your DNN portal as the "admin" then go to "site settings" on the Admin menu. Here you need to add the domain alias as a portal, and update the changes. Then go directly to the url of the domain alias and remove the hosted domain name (original domain) from the portal alias settings. Please note: only remove the hosted domain from your portal alias settings in your DNN site, do not remove the hosted domain from your control panel account unless you have followed the steps listed in approach 1 above.
