Outlook: "Can't Create File" Error when opening attachment or "The file could not be found" when attaching network files

The following article describes one possible solution to the following error messages in Outlook.

Error Messages

"Can't create file" error when opening an attachment OR "This file could not be found" when attaching a file from the network.  In addition with this error you may find the Outlook.exe process is not shutting down.

This could be caused by one of the following two reasons.

Solution 1

Your firewall is blocking the connection on the network.  Please amend your firewal to provide access to the network.

In the case of Windows 7, we have found you need to delete teh automatically created rules for the Outlook and recreate them.

Solution 2

Please follow these instructions:

  1. Close Outlook
  2. Click Start->Run and type Regedit (Windows XP) or Click Start and type in Regedit (Vista and Win 7)
  3. Select Edit->Find and search for OutlookSecureTempFolder
  4. Note the folder that is displayed in the registry key.  This is where Outlook stores temporary files.
  5. Open Windows Explorer and go to the Temporary Outlook folder from the point above
  6. Delete all the files in the folder
  7. Start Outlook and the issue should be resolved

Note: you must assess if these instructions apply to your situation.  The use of these instructions is at your own risk.
